چکیده

We have observed a sample of 15 and 8 quasars with redshifts between 0.11 and 0.87 (mean value 0.38) in the J and K' bands respectively. Eleven of the quasars were previously known to be associated with extended emission line regions. After deconvolution of the image, substraction of the PSF when possible, and identification of companions with the help of HST archive images when available, extensions are seen for at least eleven quasars. However, average profiles are different from that of the PSF in only four objects, for which a good fit is obtained with an r 1/4 law, suggesting that the underlying galaxies are ellipticals. Redshifts were available in the literature for surrounding objects in five quasar fields. For these objects, one to five companion galaxies were found. One quasar even belongs to a richness class 1 cluster. Most other quasars in our sample have nearby galaxies in projection which may also be companions. Environmental effects are therefore probably important to account for the properties of these objects. Send offprint requests to: I. Four Quasars above Redshift 6 Discovered by the Canada-france High-z Quasar Survey

The Canada-France High-z Quasar Survey (CFHQS) is an optical survey designed to locate quasars during the epoch of reionization. In this paper we present the discovery of the first four CFHQS quasars at redshift greater than 6, including the most distant known quasar, CFHQS J2329-0301 at z = 6.43. We describe the observational method used to identify the quasars and present optical, infrared, a...

The Near-infrared Variability of a Sample of Optically Selected Quasars

A complete sample of 108 optically selected quasars, the Palomar-Green quasars, has been studied at near-infrared wavelengths over an average time base of about 6 yr; in some cases the time base extends to 20 yr. The measurements show that about half the quasars have a high probability of having varied, but that half show little evidence of variability, in sharp contrast to published studies in...

Infrared Photometry of the Nebulosity around Quasars

Measurements of the nebulosity around quasars have been carried out in the near-infrared. The colors of the host galaxies found in these observations are consistent with those of normal galaxies. The luminosities are also similar to those of normal galaxies but are slightly brighter than average. Subject headings: galaxies: photometry infrared: sources quasars

A multiwavelength study of the massive star forming region IRAS 06055 + 2039 ( RAFGL 5179 )

We present a multiwavelength study of the massive star forming region associated with IRAS 06055+2039 which reveals an interesting scenario of this complex where regions are at different stages of evolution of star formation. Narrow band near-infrared (NIR) observations were carried out with UKIRT-UFTI in molecular hydrogen and Brγ lines to trace the shocked and ionized gases respectively. We h...

Infrared Properties of Serendipitous X-ray Quasars

Near-infrared measurements have been obtained of 30 quasars originally found serendipitously as x-ray sources in fields of other objects. The observations show that the infrared characteristics of these quasars do not differ significantly from those of quasars selected by other criteria. Because this x-ray-selected sample is subject to different selection biases than previous radio and optical ...
